Accident and emergency is the front door of the hospital. It runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and takes walk-ins. Intensive care and the coronary intensive care unit are on the same floor, so a patient who needs critical care is not moved to another building.
What this department treats
Anything that cannot wait for an outpatient appointment belongs here rather than in the OPD queue.
- Road traffic and workplace accidents
- Chest pain and suspected heart attack
- Breathlessness and respiratory distress
- Stroke and sudden weakness
- Poisoning and snake bite
- Burns and major wounds
- Fractures and dislocations
- High fever and severe infection
Inside the department
Triage on arrival
The patient is assessed before admission formalities are started.
Imaging on site
Digital X-ray and sonography run 24 hours in the same building.
Straight to ICU
Admission direct to intensive care where that is what is needed.
Scheme check
Cards are verified before admission rather than at discharge.
Getting seen
- Start at the general OPD. Between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm, pay the consultation charge and you will be seen and directed here. That charge includes the medicine prescribed for that day. In an emergency go straight to accident and emergency instead.
- Bring what you have. Photo identification, any scheme or insurance card, and earlier prescriptions, scans or reports.
- Scheme check before admission. Cards are verified before admission rather than at discharge.
- Rates are published. The same rate applies to every patient in a category, with no negotiation at the counter.
